Key Stage 3

Year 7

Students begin to explore the basic dance actions and have the chance to explore different styles through performance, choreography and appreciation.

What will they study:

Pure Imagination- exploring Road Dahl’s famous books and basic movement aspects. This unit is working towards a dance piece for the sharing evening.

Myself in to Movement - exploring motifs and motif development. Using Merce Cunningham’s Chance techniques.

Video Games - exploring character and exaggeration of movement. Looking out how to implement narrative using actions, space, dynamics and relationships.

Capoeira - exploring martial arts and the origins. Learning the basic techniques and rules of Capoeira.

BalletBoyz - exploring the work of this company, focusing specifically on contact work.

Street - Into the Hoods - exploring street dance techniques whilst using the Into the Hoods narrative.

Year 8

Students continue studying a range of dance styles and further deepen their understanding of performance, choreography and appreciation.

What will they study:

Musicals - exploring the exaggeration of Musical Theatre. Using narrative and characters to create movement.

Matthew Bourne - exploring the work of this famous choreographer - Nutcracker. Students will look at the various sweets and how their characteristics are turned in to movement material.

Stimuli - exploring how different types of stimulus can be used to create movement. Students will look at how to develop motifs using more complex developments.

Physical Theatre - exploring the work of choreographer Jasmin Vardimon. Students will look at character and how movement and gesture can be used within a narrative.

Shadows - this unit focuses on a professional work, exploring messages and character.

World Dance - exploring dance from various countries. Students look at history and origins, movement styles and devices.

Year 9

Students improve their skills even further. Lessons continue exploring performance, choreography and appreciation but are also developing skills in preparation for GCSE Dance.

What will they study:

Alvin Ailey - students will look at developing their technique and performing skills through a challenging unit based on the choreographer Alvin Ailey.

Audible Sound - exploring African rhythms and Stomp the musical to create interesting body percussion and rhythms.

Bruce - exploring two works by choreographer Christopher Bruce. Swansong and Rooster are dances looking at political issues within society. Students will have to perform as a character, conveying two different narratives.

Choreography Challenge - exploring how to create movement from a stimulus, using advanced motif development. Students make decisions on movement, music and structure.

The Car Man - this unit is working on technique and developing performance skills for a whole class piece.

Street - exploring the work Emancipation of Expressionism students study more complex street dance and choreography.
