GCSE skills:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features of period studied and the relevant chronology
  • Explain and analyse the causes and consequences of historical events and periods
  • Explain and analyse change and continuity of historical events and periods
  • Explain and analyse the similarities and differences between historical events and periods
  • Explain and analyse the significance of historical events and periods, including reaching a substantiated judgement
  • Analyse, evaluate and interrogate sources
  • Analyse, evaluate and interrogate interpretations
  • Relevant use of tier 2 and 3 vocabulary

 

By the end of year 9, students should be able to:

  • Show a good understanding of chronology and have an emerging range of factual material
  • Explain how causes/consequences are linked and explain relative importance
  • Analyse the nature and pace of change/continuity over the era being studied
  • Explain the similarities and/or differences between different historical events and periods
  • Describe in detail the ways in which people or events are significant
  • Consider the nature, origin and purpose of sources and begin to evaluate reliability
  • Explain clear reasons for different interpretations
  • Accurately use relevant tier 2 and 3 vocabulary in structured writing

 

By the end of year 8, students should be able to:

  • Select and deploy factual knowledge with broadly correct chronological understanding
  • Accurately explain causes/consequences of events
  • Describe elements of historical change AND continuity
  • Describe the similarities and/or differences between different historical events and periods
  • Understand the meaning of ‘significance’
  • Make inferences from sources and identify similarities and differences between sources
  • Describe different opinions about events or people
  • Use relevant tier 2 and 3 vocabulary with increasing accuracy

 

By the end of year 7, students should be able to:

  • Show some factual knowledge and general narrative understanding
  • Show understanding of some causes/ consequences
  • Describe some things that changed
  • Identify the similarities and/or differences between different historical events and periods
  • Understand the meaning of ‘importance’
  • Understand that different people have different opinions about events or people
  • Identify a number of surface-level details from the source
  • Begin to use relevant tier 2 and 3 vocabulary with some accuracy
