Year 7 Overview

Year 8 Overview

For the first few weeks of joining Friern Barnet School, students are taught in their form groups completing functional skills tasks which are accessible to all, no matter of ability. We discuss the qualities required to make an excellent mathematician and set meaningful and challenging targets for the year ahead. We also complete low stake assessments to gage an understanding of the student’s numeracy levels. This provides an opportunity to get to know our new students and their abilities and ensures they have a positive start to mathematics in secondary school.

After this time, students are placed into groups based on prior data and what we have learnt of them thus far and they begin studying our Key Stage 3 curriculum.

Students are assessed throughout and movement between sets can take place at certain points in the academic year.

The Key Stage 3 scheme of learning is differentiated and below you will find the units covered for each tier per half-term for both Year 7 and 8.
