Students study the AQA GCSE Dance course. This course explores performing, choreographing and appreciating dance. Students are examined practically on their expressive skills, technical skills, physical skills, mental skills and choreographic choices.
Component 1: Performance and Choreography - 60% of the GCSE
Performance - students learn and perform 2 set phrases in a solo performance (approximately one minute in duration). They also perform in a Duet/trio performance choreographed by the teacher and students.
Choreography - Solo or group choreography in response to an externally set exam paper – a solo (two to two and a half minutes) or a group dance for two to five dancers (three to three and a half minutes). Students may wish to perform in their own choreography, but do not have to.
Component 2: Dance appreciation - 40% of the GCSE
Students explore knowledge and understanding of choreographic processes and performing skills, critical appreciation of own work and professional works. This component is examined by a 1 hour 30 minutes exam paper.
