Modern Foreign Languages

Our aim in Modern Foreign Languages is to stimulate students' curiosity about other cultures but also to teach them all the skills necessary to become confident communicators in French or Spanish.

As teachers, we are committed to offer the best to help students achieve their best. To do so, we use a wide range of activities to ensure every child will maximise their learning. This includes pictures, colour-coding, a variety of games, songs and authentic resources.

We are very proud of our achievements, as they all lead towards students' progress and confidence in French or Spanish.

Homework

Homework is essential to ensure good progress. Home learning is expected after each lesson, and vocabulary tests, grammar tests or dictations will take place regularly as a way to track students' work. Written homework will be set on Firefly. We strongly encourage parents to support their child's learning.

Many parents have asked how to support their child in French or Spanish when they don’t speak the language themselves! Here are some suggestions:

Here are some suggestions:

  • check Firefly for homework
  • check the homework is completed
  • look at your child’s book regularly
  • ask your child what they have learnt in the lesson
  • encourage your child to revise at least once a week on Doddle and by using their book
  • discuss your child’s progress regularly

Assessments

Assessments are important in order to help student make progress by being able to reflect on their mistakes or on what can be developed.

Students will have 1 summative assessment at the end of every main unit that will focus on different skills. However, more formative assessments take place during the year:

  • vocabulary tests every week to help students learn their vocabulary and its spelling
  • conjugation tests to ensure mastery of tenses
  • dictation to help with spelling and listening skills
  • some written work will be corrected in class by students to help them reflect on specific points and compare their work
  • some written work be will corrected by teacher using the MFL literacy mark scheme (at the back of their exercise book) and/or with more detailed feedback

To allow better understanding, colour coding and keynotes will be used in class

  • Assessment need to be checked by all. MFL uses a very specific colour-coding to ensure clarity.
  • Red = feedback given by teacher
  • Green = self-assessment
  • Blue = peer-assessment
  • Yellow sheets or highlighter = communication with parents or students (response to feedback expected from students)

Steps

At Friern Barnet School we are following the guidance given by the exam board to ensure uniformity in the marking scheme. Please, have a look at the different skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing but also grammar) that have be mastered to move onto the next step.

12 Steps French
12 Steps Spanish

We expect students to be at a Step 3-4 by the end of Year 7; a Step 5 by the end of Year 8 and a Step 6 by the end of Year 9 to be GCSE ready.

Attitude to learning

Every child wants to succeed and the key ingredients for success are very simple:

  • be ready to work
  • try your best
  • ask for help when needed

Students benefit from participating and learn from their own as well as each other's mistakes. Therefore, displaying a positive attitude to learning is essential for everyone to succeed.

Showing respect is the cornerstone of the learning environment.

As MFL teachers we are committed to preparing engaging and relevant lessons as well as rewarding or sanctioning behaviour and work in lessons.
